Warehouse and distillery fires are often devastating because of the alcohol involved. In addition, distiller's facilities show a continuous trend of higher storage in either palletized or rack-storage configurations. Wooden barrels come in a variety of sizes and have unique failure modes. FM Global has worked to resolve the fire-protection challenges created by storage of wooden barrels filled with aging distilled spirits. The adequacy of ceiling-only protection for 7-tier-high palletized stacks of whisky barrels was tested utilizing K14.0 (K202) and K25.2 (K360) sprinklers and the leak rate from individual barrels after prolonged fire exposure was obtained. This session will discuss this testing and explain how, overall, the distilled-storage program conducted by FM Global has resulted in effective protection strategies to mitigate the risk faced by distilled spirits warehouse operators. Key contributors to the project include Jaap de Vries, John A. LeBlanc, Christopher J. Wieczorek, and Matthew J. Daelhousen.
