NFPA standards require that water-based fire protection systems to be protected against freezing. Balancing the consequences of having inadequate freeze protection against the need for dependable and cost-effective fire protection are a constant challenge for building owners, AHJs, and contractors. This session will examine the conditions that trigger mandatory freeze protection along with the approved options for meeting the requirement. The design limitations and economic impact (including maintenance) of using dry pipe systems, preaction systems, insulation, heat tracing, antifreeze solutions, and other potential protection methods will be examined. Also included will be a review of items to be considered when making a choice on how best to provide adequate protection.
