A number of people are killed or injured each year as a result of faulty wiring in docks and boats. Electricity allowed to escape into the water sets up electrical gradients that may be lethal to anyone in the water. People can be electrocuted or paralyzed, the latter of which results in drowning. There are codes and standards in place to provide protection for boats, docks, and marinas, which, if followed, would reduce the number of fatalities and injuries. This session will identify the nature of electric shock drowning in the freshwater dock/marina environment and discuss strategies to improve safety around boats and docks using electrical power.
