The citizens' demand for customer-oriented service of the fire department has increased. It's not enough to put out fires in any way possible; fire fighters are expected to apply damage-limiting tactics that effectively save property and minimize all sorts of damages, including those caused by fire, fire suppression operations, extinguishing water, and smoke to limite clean-up and restoration costs, business interruption, etc. This session will present damage-limiting fire fighting tactics used in Europe including examples of both, good fire fighting performances that mitigated further damage and poor performances that resulted in avoidable loss. Differences between American and European building constructions and fire fighting approaches will also be discussed.
