Fire-resistance-rated and smoke-resistant assemblies and their features are critical to fire and life safety in all occupancies, especially health care. "Penetrations and Doors" has been on The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Top 10 list for three years. This session will review the proper installation, inspection, and maintenance/management of the penetrations in these fire-resistance-rated and smoke-resistant assemblies. We'll cover a little on doors as well. Knowing what it takes to build these facilities correctly from the start helps set the commissioning process moving in the right direction. Most important, buildings are always being altered--to manage the process correctly, a barrier management system is needed. There are several types of these that need staff cooperation at all levels.
