The Building Code of Australia (BCA) recently adopted a new performance-based requirement for the use of elevators for emergency egress. This requirement is the only one in the BCA without a prescriptive approach. To assist in the implementation of the requirement, the Australian Building Codes Board wrote a handbook identifying the main design and operational considerations to be addressed; but the handbook is written for a broad audience including fire safety engineers, architects, building owners and managers, fire officials, and builders. Therefore, it is hard for all of these stakeholders to comprehend what information is critical to their needs. This talk will highlight some of the lessons learned in communicating with stakeholders about this new provision of the BCA.
