Since 1995, Massachusetts has been funding the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program. This program provides funds to allow trained fire fighters to collaborate with classroom teachers to present fire and life safety education in age-appropriate lessons. While the grant program allows for flexibility on the local level, a task force convened by the State Fire Marshal identified key fire safety behaviors that should be taught to students at various ages. After a dramatic decrease in child fire deaths in the state, assessments were developed and implemented to demonstrate that the benefits of the evidence-based prevention and intervention program are both tangible and replicable. An analysis of the data shows the grant program has contributed to creating a fire-safe generation.
