The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has a strong and meaningful history in the United States. For example, NFPA provided the foundation for developing national preparedness standards incorporated as the framework for the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP), a joint project of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the National Emergency Managers Association (NEMA). Today, under the watchful eye of the EMAP Commission, emergency managers at state and local jurisdictions are attempting to meet EMAP standards. The question is, where does that leave NFPA with regards to future contributions to emergency management? And, how can NFPA continue its fine tradition of contributions to the profession of emergency management going forward?
