In today's economy chemical manufacturers are being challenged to provide packaging options aimed at both reduced handling and more efficient operations. An area of significant change has been the use of composite intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) for the storage and use of combustible liquids. The commercial growth of composite IBCs in flammable and combustible liquid service has been challenging risk managers to assure a safe and NFPA 30– compliant operation. Find out about the provisions for "protected" and "unprotected" storage in NFPA 30 including liquid properties, container types, allowable quantities, storage arrangements, aisle spacing, and recognized fire protection systems. You'll also hear about a case study of the process used by a major specialty chemicals company to manage the hazard through the U.S.-wide implementation of a UL 2368 listed composite IBC program. Also, a new research program to explore the potential for safe storage of selected aqueous solutions of polar solvents and emulsions in these containers will be described.
