For the first time in the history of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code another emergency system is allowed to take precedence over a fire alarm signal for message and emergency notification. The process and approval for the priority of signals is required to be determined by a risk analysis. The term "risk analysis" appears approximately 44 times in Chapter 24 of NFPA 72–2010 and this edition is the first time that users of the code must rely on the risk analysis process for mass notification systems. In this session you will learn about the basic risk analysis concepts that should be used to meet the requirements of the code and we will also review each section where risk analysis is required.

Wayne Moore is a licensed professional fire protection engineer and a Principal with the fire protection engineering and code-consulting firm, Hughes Associates, Inc. in Warwick, Rhode Island. Mr. Moore has written numerous articles, was an Editor and contributor of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, is a Co-Editor of the Fire Alarm Signaling Systems book and Editor of the National Fire Alarm Code Handbook; Mr. Moore is a regular contributor to the NFPA Journal and a recipient of the NFPA Standards Medal. Wayne is an instructor of the NFPA Fire Alarm Systems Seminar, and co-editor of the Moore-Wilson Signaling Report. He is a member and past Chairman of the National Fire Alarm Code Technical Correlating Committee, Chairman of the NFPA Research Foundation's Fire Detection and Alarm Research Council and chairman of the NFPA 72 Emergency Communications systems Technical Committee. He is also vice chairman of the Rhode Island Engineering Licensing Board.
