The Center for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been investigating the risk factors for EMS workers involved in ambulance crashes. NIOSH is identifying and testing alternative measures to reduce injury risk to EMS workers. The NIOSH Evaluation of Emergency Services Vehicle Occupant Safety Project involves the review of data on ambulance crash statistics, hazard identification, and task analysis; determination of appropriate crash-testing methodologies and development of occupant restraint systems; and modeling of ambulance crash scenarios and how this might benefit the standards development process.

James Green, Safety Engineer, Safety Controls Team, Protective Technology Branch, Division of Safety Research, NIOSH located in Morgantown, WV.  Mr. Green has been engaged in research regarding ambulance patient compartment crash safety since 2001.  He has now teamed with the Ambulance Manufacturers Division of the National Truck Equipment Association, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, and the General Services Administration in an effort to developed new crash safety standards based on his work.  Mr. Green is also a member of the NFPA 1917 Automotive Ambulance Standard Committee and hopes to transition much of his team's standards development efforts to the NFPA 1917 in its second revision.

Larry Stewart is the NFPA staff liaison to the TC on Ambulances
