While phased-evacuation strategies for high-rise buildings have set precedents in the U.S. for many years, a series of requirements in the 2009 International Building Code will force fire protection consultants to also consider egress strategies for full building evacuations. With these new requirements providing an initial framework, consultants should be cautious when developing such strategies for global projects. Full building evacuation strategies utilizing refuge floors have already set precedents in Asia and the Middle East. This session will highlight some of the key considerations when developing a strategy for a full building evacuation, including evacuation timing, human behavior, and potential hazards.
