Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is an extremely common virus that causes cancer in all genders. Oropharyngeal cancers caused by HPV have increased by 225% in the last 20 years and are expected to be more numerous than cervical cancer by the year 2020. Since the dental team is crucial in helping patients understand risk factors and prevention for oral cancer, dentists and hygienists have an important role in educating patients about HPV, performing thorough oral cancer exams, and referring their patients and communities to get immunized with the HPV vaccine. This course will educate attendees on HPV and related cancers, the dentist's role in cancer screening and prevention, and have a strong focus on how to communicate with your patients about the topic. This is a crucial public health issue for the whole dental team; we can go a long way in early diagnosis and prevention of oropharyngeal cancer!
