In this course the molecular constituents of saliva will be discussed The instructor will review the proof of concept studies in animals that demonstrate a change in the molecular constituents of saliva in response to remote malignancy. The discovery of unique molecular footprints for several malignancies and additional systemic diseases will be presented. Salivary markers for the detection of oral squamous cell cancer will be reviewed in detail and will serve as an example of the process from discovery, pre-validation, and subsequent final validation for clinical use. The role of these markers in primary care setting will be discussed in an interactive format.
