Based on Dr. Shapiro's recent book, The Art and Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness into Psychotherapy and the Helping Professions, the workshop offers scientific research and meditative practices for therapists interested in awakening the mind and opening the heart. Drawing on current research in psychology, medicine and cognitive neuroscience, we will investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation on decreasing pathology and increasing positive psychological and physiological states. Further, we will explore ways of integrating mindfulness and meditation into clinical practice as well as applying mindfulness personally cultivate greater health, well being and freedom.
During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
- Explain current meditation research spanning the fields of psychotherapy, medicine, education, and cognitive neuroscience;
- Define mindfulness three core elements of mindfulness; and
- Describe different means of integrating mindfulness and meditation into clinical work.
Shauna Shapiro, PhD is Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, licensed clinical psychologist, and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and meditative practices. Dr. Shapiro began her study of psychology and meditation at Duke University, graduating summa cum laude, and received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona, where she served as adjunct faculty for Andrew Weil's Center for Integrative Medicine. With 20 years of meditation experience studying in Thailand and Nepal, as well as in the West, Dr. Shapiro brings an embodied sense of mindfulness to her academic work. She has conducted extensive clinical research investigating the effects of mindfulness training across a wide range of populations and has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles in addition to co-authoring the critically acclaimed professional text, The Art and Science of Mindfulness, with a forward by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies teaching award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to graduate education and has been invited to lecture for the King of Thailand, the Danish Government Centre for Development of Human Resources, Nueva Innovative Learning, and the World Council for Psychotherapy, Beijing, China.
