Major reviews of therapies for anxiety disorders in children have shown the remission rate for CBT to be 56%. Hypnosis has been shown to be useful as an adjunctive skill to control anxiety in 76% of teenagers with anxiety. A method that I have devised combining elements of CBT with hypnotic techniques with 30 children/teens in my practice has shown a remission rate of 63% plus another 30% significantly improved. This step-by-step procedure, termed the Wellspring Method, can be easily taught and is well-suited to the child’s natural gift of imagery and creativity. The steps in the process include helping the child or teen target specific fears underlying their anxiety, stimulating their motivation to participate in therapy, mentally rehearsing anxiety-laden scenarios, blending in strength and confidence, using self-suggestion techniques and creating positive expectation.
During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Explain the steps involved in the Wellspring Method; and
-> Engage children or teenagers more effectively in therapy for anxiety and produce a more rapid therapeutic response.
