Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, particularly functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are
prevalent and associated with high morbidity, high rates of anxiety and depression, and impaired societal
productivity. Hypnosis has been shown to have efficacy in treating IBS. This workshop will review the empirical
evidence to support use of hypnosis in IBS and demonstrate specific hypnotic tools to achieve this impact.
It will also provide practical suggestions about how to integrate hypnosis into medical and psychological
treatments of IBS.
During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Summarize the current state of knowledge about the effectiveness of hypnosis treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS);
-> Describe hypnotic techniques such as crafting effective suggestions and metaphors for treating IBS; and
-> Integrate hypnotic techniques into psychological and medical treatment of IBS.
