Presenter: David Patterson, PhD, ABPH & Mark Jensen, PhD
This workshop will focus on managing both acute and chronic pain with hypnosis. The presenters will discuss approaches to assessing pain from a biopsychosocial perspective and providing appropriate hypnotic interventions both on the type of pain (acute vs. chronic; musculoskeletal vs. neuropathic) as well as the challenges that the patient presents (e.g., disuse, poor coping, sleep, management of discomfort).
The workshop will be based on the presenters’ 40 years of combined clinical experience, the 350 articles and chapters they have authored, as well as the books they have each recently published (Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control, (2010); Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management: A Therapist’s Guide, (2011)). Participant experiential practices with the various inductions demonstrated will be emphasized.
During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Explain the neurophysiological basis of pain and the implications of this for designing tailored and targeted hypnotic suggestions;
-> Describe how cognitive and behavioral factors influence pain and the implications of this for designing hypnotic suggestions that help clients shift from maladaptive to adaptive cognitive processes and behaviors;
-> Perform hypnotic inductions for crisis, procedural and chronic pain; and
-> Apply hypnosis directly to their treatment of pain with patients.
