Master Class: Pain Management
David Patterson, PhD, ABPH and Mark Jensen, PhD
This workshop will focus on managing both acute and chronic pain with hypnosis. The presenters will discuss approaches to assessing pain from a biopsychosocial perspective and providing appropriate hypnotic interventions both on the type of pain (acute vs. chronic; musculoskeletal vs. neuropathic) as well as the challenges that the patient presents (e.g., disuse, poor coping, sleep, management of discomfort). The workshop will be based on the 40 years of combined clinical experience of the instructors, the 350 articles and chapters they have authored, as well as the books they have each recently published (Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control, 2010; Therapist Guidebook on Self‐Hypnosis Training for Chronic Pain Management, 2011). Participant experiential practices with the various inductions demonstrated will be emphasized.
This entire workshop is oriented towards patient care. First, when the neurophysiological basis and psychological basis of pain are discussed, it will be done with practical clinical implications in mind. Participants will learn about the nature of pain, but in a way that relates to patient care. Second, a large emphasis will be placed on practical clinical implications. Participants will be instructed on how to take a pain history but with an emphasis on how it leads to hypnosis. Third, Ericksonian approaches will be taught using a number of practical, clinical examples. In addition, participants will practice these approaches as if they are working with a patient. Finally, participants will learn to do hypnosis inductions as they relate to specific types of clinical pain.
