This workshop is designed to assist advanced practitioners who work with cancer patients or wish to start working with this population. In this hands-on workshop we will first briefly present a non-linear model outlining the potential stages of cancer. These stages will be used to discuss the patients' varying needs at different points in their cancer treatment. Participants will learn how they can assist cancer patients with using hypnosis for managing the issues, symptoms and challenges at each of the stages. The presenters will discuss the use of language, especially as it relates to the potential side effects and symptoms of the patient's treatments. Additional issues that will be addressed include resistance, referrals, informed consent, and reframing. We will discuss the utilization of hypnotic phenomena with cancer patients. The presenters will teach participants a self-hypnosis technique that can be quickly and easily taught to patients. Participants will have the opportunity to interact and participate in several experiential exercises. The presenters will also share from their experiences working with cancer patients regarding what has worked and what has not worked. The major emphasis will be on providing specific "how-to's" in formulating techniques for working with cancer patients.

After this workshop participants will have many techniques and suggestions that they can take back to their office and utilize with cancer patients to help enhance the patient's quality of life. Participants will be able to teach the skills of self-hypnosis to patients. This tool is empowering for cancer patients who often find themselves in overwhelming situations and may at times feel helpless.
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to…

Recognize at least two issues and challenges faced by cancer patients dealing with each
of the primary treatment modalities; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation and be able
to construct a hypnotic suggestion for each of the issues and challenges they identify.;
Teach a self-hypnosis technique to cancer patients; and
Recognize how hypnotic phenomena can assist cancer patients with 3 of the issues and
challenges they face.
