Oklahoma has 38 Indian tribes within its borders, yet as of January 2008 there
were only 4 Oklahoma THPOs recognized by the NPS. Indian communities will be
affected by preservation with or without their input—but it’s better for tribes to
engage in the process and define for themselves what is historically significant in
their own communities and what protections are built into the laws. Tribes then
can benefit more from heritage tourism and the economic opportunities it
provides. Discuss why—and how—tribes should embrace preservation.
