The mystique of Route 66—with its neon signs enticing travelers to buy, see,
do—endures in the American memory. Using neon as a symbol, this session will
explore the American myth of the open road, and how preservationists are now
charged with connecting memory to place. Hear from authors, preservationists,
and scholars about bridging the gap between the romantic imagery of the
highway and the economic reality.
